Today the Maintenance and Engineering's (ME) Melhoria Contínua Week (SMC) initiates its tenth edition. Taking place between 22 and 26 january, this is the first of six events scheduled for 2018 and the other five editions are expected to happen in march, may, july, september and november.
In 2017, 29 new projects were presented and developed during the four SMC editions that happened. 124 Employees participated in these events, 77 of which for the first time.
According to this initiative's format, during the week, after the work processes that can have improvement opportunities were identified, they were deeply analyzed by the teams. They diagnosed and implemented alterations on the methods learned in the training they received on the part of the ME's "Processos e Melhoria Contínua" team.
At the beginning of each event, previous projects are recalled. Last year, several projects were completed and the results of others, already implemented, were presented and, some of which, were successful cases, like the four we show below.
Engines' core removal tool
In the scope of SMC fourth edition, which occurred in may of 2016, it was developed a specific tool by an Engines Maintenance team, with the purpose of helping in the Engines' core removal.
During 2017, this tool was successfully used in 27 cfm56-5b engines, allowing the Company to avoid expenses in more than 400 000 euros.
Using this new tool has allowed a safe core removal without causing any damage in the engine constituent parts, proving the purpose and benefit of this project.

"Fatura na hora"
The purpose of this project, created in 2016 during the fifth SMC, was to automate the billing process to obtain productivity profits, identifying conditions for the implementation of the concept "Fatura na Hora".
At the same time, the Customer Portal has been developed and implemented, and now the Customer has all the information on an online basis, continuously updated by the intervening areas in the ongoing processes, being accessible anywhere and anytime.
The concept "Fatura na Hora" is already a reality in some ME areas, namely, in the Laboratory of Calibrations and this concept is being extended to the areas of Airplanes, Engines and Components, as well as Logistics/Material Sales and to the Line Maintenance.
The implementation of this project will allow a greater reliability and availability of all information, as well as higher comfort and speed in the bills release and on their consequent payment by the Customers.

Work Packages – Signatures Procedures
Under the 7th SMC, which took place in May of last year, a proposal about the use of stamps was presented by an Aircraft Maintenance team, replacing the traditional signatures of the work letters.
The purpose of this project is trying to reduce the time that is spent on the tasks' signature managing to reduce, significantly, the duration of the periods spent in the validation of the work letters.
Is expected, with the redesign of this process, an annual saving of more than 1200 work hours.

Kit car for the PDU Rollers repair
In September of 2017, during the 8th SMC, a Components Maintenance team developed a project related with the PDU Rollers repair, the responsible unit for the cargo containers movements in the aircrafts holds.
In this event, in addition to the normalization of the operations associated to the maintenance task, a kit car with an integrated workbench was created, specific for the execution of this task, which allowed a reduction of the average TAT from 29 to 16 days, in other words, the average repair time of these components decreased 45 per cent.
In the execution of the project, improvements were also considered in the infrastructure associated to the ergonomic aspects, which allow better working conditions for the performers.

More events in 2018
The projects presented at SMC always bring gains to the organization. The results of the rational and objective analysis of the processes are always the simplification, elimination of redundant tasks or that don't bring added value and, therefore, improvements, both in the reduction of the execution time and in the costs of production.
For the DGME, Mário Lobato Faria, the analysis and review of the processes, in order to obtain a greater logic and rationality in the operations is fundamental to reach the levels of efficiency, productivity and competitiveness that are required to a Maintenance and Engineering organization.
ME's management is still determined on continue to promote these events and clearly "will continue to send a very strong message to the entire organization, reinforcing the commitment made," says.
ME's leader adds that "we want to, continuously, involve more and more people in these methodologies, so that in the future, the "melhoria contínua" projects can be born spontaneously within the areas, without needing to wait for the "Melhoria Contínua" Weeks, which will obviously continue to exist".
