Capital of North Rhine- Westphalia, Cologne is a city that amazes the visitors for its irreverence, almost Latin besides, of course, the iconic attractions like its cathedral, which UNESCO classifies as World Heritage. Therefore, you have every reason to visit Cologne. Here's 5 attractions you can't really miss.

Cologne's Catedral

Cologne's Cathedral is one of the highest churches in the world and it is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. Devoted to Saint Peter and Holy Mary, the cathedral is the most visited monument in Germany and it is an unavoidable building of Cologne. The cathedral is truly majestic and stunning, dominating the capital of North Rhine- Westphalia's urban landscape. Everywhere you look, she is there, looking magnanimous.

Inside, don't forget to notice the glass windows and the wood carvings. The entry is free but try to get there early to avoid the crowds.

Ludwig Museum

Ludwig Museum is the Museum of Contemporary Art of Cologne. It is located near the Cathedral and has a really interesting legacy of modern art with some famous names – like Roy Lichtenstein, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, René Magritte or Andy Warhol, more than enough reasons to include this Museum on your what to do in Cologne list.

Pop Art has a relevant role in the museum but there is much more than Warhol to see!

Augustusburg Palace

Augustusburg Palace is a great example of the Rococo architecture successes in Europe. It is located on the tiny city of Brühl, just a few kilometers from Cologne, and it is surely one of the highest points of any trip to the region.

It's worth getting to Augustusburg Palace early so you can visit it with fewer people there. The tours must be assisted by a German guide but fortunately you can take an audio guide in Portuguese, provided freely by the kind employees of the Palace, built by Clemente Augusto of Baviera.

Farina Museum

Eau de Cologne owes its name precisely to the german city of Cologne. Among the current producers, the most emblematic is House Farina, which original fragrance, created by the Italian perfumer, Giovanni Maria Farina, it is still produced, nowadays. It was him that created and popularize the fragrance.

Visiting Cologne's Perfume Museum is a calm and nice way of getting to know an important part of the city's history. The tour, also supervised by a guide, is one hour long and, despite not being an entirely necessary experience, if you don't have much time, it is worth it.

Drinking a Kölsch

Cologne takes traditional beer very seriously. In Päffgen brewery, for example, the beer is never bottled because they say the flavor wouldn't be the same. It is produced daily in the same place and it comes straight from the barrel onto the glasses that the employees transport in a round tray with holes, so they can hold them. Since 1883. I had the opportunity of drinking, for the first time, a Kölsch beer.

Therefore, you should attend one of the best traditional breweries of Cologne. The Päffgen-Kölsch brewery is located on the Friensenstrasse area and is one of city's most renowned.
