Travel is an opportunity to discover different worlds, different knowledge and new approaches. It offers contact with different realities, stimulates the senses, triggers new ways of looking and offers new interpretations.
The life of a cabin crew member involves a lot of travel and a lot of staying away from home. So, you have to take advantage of your free time to do what you like best.
Ana Areal is a TAP flight attendant and enjoys the free time her job gives her to let her imagination soar and develop her artwork.
She started working for TAP in 1997, got an in-flight position in 2004 and has been working on long-haul flights for nine years. She is passionate about the company and the job she does. While realising her dream, she is also developing her artistic talents where she feels at home, whether it’s writing or creating illustrations.
While working on TAP’s long-haul routes, she decided to extend her studies and completed a degree and a Master's in communication. Part of the latter course covered digital communication and social networks.
Her academic training combined with her willpower are what drives her to other challenges and to get involved in the other projects to which she is invited. These include lecturing on the blogosphere at her alma mater, Lisbon’s Universidade Autónoma, or taking part with other writers in a women’s blog, "Life in High Heels", in the Portuguese weekly Expresso - with her articles later published in a book.
The experience of having her work published led her in to publishing a book of fairy tales for children, Come Here, Mum, which was followed by more contributions to collections of prose, with a short story and several poems.
Hand-in-hand with writing, she is busy on social networks with her digital art project - Padcanvas - which Ana describes as "an innovative artistic style that combines painting, editing, image creation and manipulation".
She has always liked art, but it was when she acquired an iPad and began to explore drawing applications that she became truly immersed in the digital world and got creative. She brought together several areas that have always interested her, including fashion, faces, make-up and poetry, which she combines with landscapes of the places she is constantly visiting in her professional life.
She follows the journeys and works of other artists who have made their mark in this field. She has found the motivation to create a page on Instagram, where she has begun to publish their work.
Her published works on Instagram have gained international recognition, and she is currently participating with other artists in two online projects: "Shop Life" in the United States and "Visualtroop" in Singapore, selling items with her illustrations on scarves, handbags, cushions, mobile phone covers and more.
Ana has recently developed several aviation-related works, using figures to represent professionals from various sectors of the aviation world. Some of these illustrations with stylised models showing off TAP uniforms were turned into posters that she offered to the company and which are now on exhibit in the company’s uniform section.
